Sebum, a natural oil, is produced in glands that are deep inside the pore, which is on the skin surface, this is what helps to protect the skin and keep it flexible. Bacteria forms inside the pores when the natural secretion process is interrupted. This is caused by pores closing - all this results in acne.

The white pimples that sometimes form are usually a combination of dead skin cells, white blood cells and bacteria. The trapped pus often creates an inflamed, red area around it. The term ‘pus’ is an adaptation of ‘pustule’, a type of acne that results when the follicle wall bursts and the white blood cells rush into the area as part of a healing process.

While it’s good to know what acne is, being able to treat it is the most important thing, we next look at who gets acne.

Who Gets Acne? At some stage in life, almost everybody gets acne.

Acne typically develops in teens, girls around age 11 and 13 in boys, reflecting the average age at which puberty starts.

Because males produce more androgen hormones, they tend to develop a more severe acne.

Young or even mature adults can get acne, women more often than men.

It is quite common to get acne on other parts of your body, like back and neck areas, in fact, it occurs in one quarter of people that are affected.

Through studies it has been proven that the occurrence of acne has been affected by the monthly hormonal cycle of women. Of women aged 20-32 the occurrence of premenstrual related acne affected almost 44% of women. Further studies have also shown that the effect of the menstrual cycle on acne is much higher in women aged 33 and older.

The point is acne can occur at any age. Acne can appear in those over 50 and even later in life. Often it is related to taking certain drugs. It is not just a teen’s disease and it can have many causes.
